Baltimore resident and student at Loyola University Maryland named 2016 Newman Civic Fellow

2016 May 12

Eric Baker, 2018, a theology major at Loyola University Maryland, was named a 2016 Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. The award honors inspiring student leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions to challenges faced by their communities.

Baker, a Baltimore native, was nominated by Loyola's president, Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J.

"At this moment in Loyola's history-and in Baltimore's-we are in particular need of people who will help our community work toward a brighter future. Eric is one of those individuals," Fr. Linnane said. "Our campus, our community, and our world need more people like Eric who recognize problems, take up the fight to address them, engage the community in conversation, and follow through with tenacity, purpose, conviction, and faith."

At Loyola, Baker works alongside students, faculty, staff, and administrators on the Presidential Task Force for Racial Justice Training. He also volunteers for Acts4Youth and the Refugee Youth Project through the Center for Community Service and Justice.

Baker also participates in the 300 Men March and Charm City Initiative. He volunteers in various programs that serve youth in Baltimore, and is a member of the Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape program.

"Jesus laid down his life for me and he calls me to do the same for others. It has had such a huge impact on my life that compassionate consideration for my own community is just a must," Baker said. "I would not be here if I didn't receive intentional guidance and plenty of second chances. There is a lot of work to do and enough space for all of us to get involved here in Baltimore."

He says his reason for serving in his community is to be an example for his four younger brothers. After graduation, Baker plans to attend law school.
