Mathis Named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year; Yanchoris to All-Academic Team

2017 May 10

Loyola University Maryland senior Bailey Mathis was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's lacrosse, while she was joined by sophomore Kristen Yanchoris on the 13-member Patriot League All-Academic Team, as announced by the League office Wednesday.

Mathis and Yanchoris were two of four League defenders to earn All-Patriot League First Team honorees this season, while Mathis becomes Loyola's second Patriot League Scholar-Athlete Of The Year for women's lacrosse since the Greyhounds joined the League in July 2013, as Kara Burke earned the accolade as a senior in 2015.

Mathis, a psychology major carrying a 3.914 grade-point average, is making her third-straight appearance on the Patriot League All-Academic Team. A three-time All-Patriot League honoree and two-time first-team defender, Mathis was the lone Patriot League player and one of only seven defenders on this season's Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The Greyhounds' top match-up defender, Mathis was named the Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after holding Georgetown's Preseason All-American Francesca Whitehurst scoreless. She also picked up Baltimore Sun Player of the Week honors that week.

Throughout her career, Mathis has started all 80 games for the Greyhounds. She's scored four goals, scooped up 54 ground balls, won 60 draw controls and caused 42 turnovers. This season alone, she has 23 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.

Yanchoris, a sophomore from Sykesville, Maryland, is a sophomore business major carrying a 3.93 grade-point average. A two-time All-Patriot League defender, Yanchoris earned her first first-team honor after leading the team with 32 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers this season. In addition, Yanchoris' 15 caused turnovers in Patriot League games ranks tied for second among all League defenders.

Through her first two seasons, Yanchoris has played 35 games and has 57 ground balls and 43 caused turnovers.

To be eligible for the Corvias Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Greyhounds will begin their quest for a fourth-straight Patriot League Championship on Friday when they host Boston University in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament at Ridley Athletic Complex. Opening draw is scheduled for 5 p.m.
